Keeping good staff can be as challenging as finding them, which is why it is important to understand broadly their needs at different stages of their development in your business. Obviously, people work for different reasons and this too plays a part in their reasons to come on board, stay or leave, but getting the basic structure of engagement right will go a long way to finding and retaining the right people and build a strong foundation for your businesses growth and success. Briefly, Levels 1 - 4 cover the period from recruitment through probation of 3 - 6 months. We recommend 6 month probationary periods to fully assess both role fit and cultural fit. It is often only over time that a person’s true values and attitude becomes apparent. Levels 5 – 7 is approximately up to 18 months. If you are meeting their needs through Levels 8 and 9 you can expect this to cover up to 2 - 3 years and longer than that you typically need to be able to offer them career advancement if that is a driver for them. We find that a lot of small business owners struggle at Levels 1 – 5 where you need strong basic HR systems of recruitment (e.g. job descriptions - commercial and cultural requirements of the role), induction (expectation management, systems and training) and performance management (communication process to help maintain performance and develop them).
